WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society report cancer as the leading cause of death by disease among US children between 0 and the age of 18. This tragic disease is newly diagnosed in over 9,910 of our country's young people under the age of 14 each year. Over 40,000 children undergo treatment each year and one in five of our nation's children loses his or her battle with cancer. This year alone an estimated 1,590 cancer deaths will occur in children. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children 1-14 and 60% of infants, children and teens who survive will suffer from the long-term effects of comprehensive medical treatment, including secondary cancers; and
WHEREAS, Blaze of Hope was established to spread the message of HOPE to families of children battling life-threatening illnesses by providing financial assistance, raising awareness and building community.
Blaze of Hope recognizes that pediatric cancer effects families of all races, color, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.
WHEREAS, during the month of September, we remember the young lives taken too soon, stand with the families facing childhood cancer today, and rededicate ourselves to combating this terrible illness.
Blaze of Hope is asking to get the Pensacola Bay Bridge illuminated GOLD during the month of September to honor and pay tribute to the families, friends, professionals, and communities who lend their strength to children fighting pediatric cancer.
THEREFORE, 1, D.C. Reeves, Mayor of Pensacola, Florida, take pride in recognizing the month of September 2023 as "National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month" and encourage all citizens to join in reaffirming the commitment to fighting childhood cancer.
